A huge moment for Star Wars fans happened on Friday’s main panel at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida, as the trailer for the upcoming installment in the main series, The Last Jedi, was made public today. The trailer dropped during the discussion with Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and Lucasfilm executive Kathleen Kennedy. 40,000 were in attendance to watch the trailer, which appears to portray The Last Jedi in a darker tone than expected. Fans were particularly rattled by an aged Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) saying that the Jedi had to end. Other scenes, such as Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) swinging her lightsaber on the island from the final scene of The Force Awakens, and a brief appearance of Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) got fans wild.
Following the release of the trailer, Johnson told fans that the film is currently in the post-production and editing stages. He shared with the fans behind the scenes photographs from filming in London and Ireland, including shots of the late Carrie Fisher. As evidenced by the appearances of Finn (played by John Boyega) and Poe (played by Oscar Isaac), Johnson confirmed that both characters would return and interact with each other in the upcoming film. BB-8, the fan favorite droid from The Force Awakens, was also confirmed to return.
Other information revealed was that the most important new character would be played by Kelly Marie Tran. Tran said that she is playing a Resistance member named Rose. As for Hamill’s role playing a character who was mostly absent from the previous film, the panel stated that there would be “a lot unsaid about where he’s been and what he’s done.”
Friday was only the second day of this four-day convention dedicated to all things Star Wars. The Last Jedi is slated to premiere in U.S. theaters December 15, 2017.
