The New Zealand based international pop star Lorde is in the middle of a social media storm after a badly phrased description of her relationship with fellow pop superstar Taylor Swift. In an interview with The Guardian, she said, “It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.” She was blasted for what was deemed an insensitive swipe at people who have allergies that they have no control over. Lorde was later apologetic, writing a tweet saying, “I f**ked up & that was really insensitive. I’m sorry,” following it up with a rose emoji.
didn't mention taylor, but regardless, i fucked up & that was really insensitive. i'm sorry 🌹

In the interview, she also talked about her concerns leading up to the release of her latest album, Melodrama. “A lot of people we played [“Green Light”] to hated it when they first heard it,” Lorde said. She said she also worried about people longing for the style she established with her earlier work: “You think: ‘God, what if I develop? And what if they don’t like who I develop into? What if they want me to go back to being an embryo?’”
However, Lorde says that she is helped by friends in the industry, including Swift, when she goes through these second guessings. She said that she is still focused on her goal to be as musically good as her songwriting idols Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, although she recognized “that takes time.” Her songwriting abilities, The Guardian opined, are reflected in her constant search for finding the right words, which is why the quote concerning Swift and allergies was particularly out of place. That quote was right next to a self-deprecating description of her speech patterns, where she said, “I’m lie an old witch when I talk. I do meander. But I always come back around.”
